The thing I'm so impressed with is that the "drop-down" actually drops down INSIDE the NAV. And that it also includes a pointer along the side of the NAV showing which option is hoovered above.
Any suggestion or links to where I can find out how to create this effect?

Once you do it you'll be amazed how simple it is to do. A book that you will find helpful is Jason Cranford Teague's book, "DHTML and CSS: for the world wide web," published by PeachPit Press. It's a good reference/tutorial and reasonably priced--check Amazon's used book price for generally the lowest price.
