There are many websites offering free ebooks. But if rights are not mentioned, can i resell them or just give them away for free on my site? especially those books that are classics or from popular items like John Grisham?
I am just thinking that how do publishers stop others from profiting off these books, especially since for example i may be halfway around the world.

The net is smaller than you think it is. As an e-book author and publisher of more than 12 e-books and digital information products I have found a few occassions where someone has been illegally giving or reselling my products away.
In each case I directly approached them (first via email, and one by phone) indicating that my products are copyright and cannot be given away or sold.
I also put this in bold letters on the second page of the e-book as many people just assume, especially if the e-book was illegally passed to them.
Only in one case did I have to get a lawyer to send a letter to one person who refused to listen, after the letter, he took the entire site down.

Hi Jeff,
Thanks for your reply. If this is the case, are the books such as the classics or John Grisham ones given away free by other sites, free for me to give away as well?
As for the copyright issue, I was just thinking if push comes to shove, how can we enforce the copyright, especially when the offender is based in other countries which really limits the options we have due to cost, logistics issues, and cross border complications etc.

EbookNewbie;
To protect your own copyright content you could use strong "anti-theft" security software that prevents anyone from stealing or sharing your PDF/eBook -- (such as HYPrLock for instance ;-)
