Has anybody made an ebook from a version of the Bible?
We are considering doing it, and would like to see a sample and/or hear how you addressed the need to jump from any location to any other location i.e. a search by book, chapter & verse?
Several sites provide download versions - usually either OT, NT, or individual books. These seem to be in PDF (presumably so they are platform independant). I link to one athttp://www.wbtc.comwhich is in easy-read English. These are free to download, if you want to see how they tackle it.
I think Gutenberg Project (spelling?) offers a plain text bible, that you might be able to use as a starting point. You would need to check on their site or with them for any terms and conditions that may apply.
I guess the text/translation of something really old (how old depends on the country) will have it's copyright expired by now and have entered the public domain.
However I expect a modern presentation (computer file, ebook etc) of old text, could be copyrighted. I am not a lawyer, but I expect this would be similar to recordings of classical music, where the original musical composition is out of copyright, but the arrangement and performance is in copyright.
It would be a good idea to get some professional advice about this (like talk to a lawyer).
The reason I mentioned Gutenberg project, is I *think* they have fairly liberal rules for using their texts. But you need to check into this yourself, if necessary with appropriate advice.
The copyright holder for this particular version of the Bible has approached me about producing an ebook Bible for them. They are wanting it to be able to be used on a Palm device, Pocket PC & on a desktop PC. Unfortunately that means coding it three times. To bad ebookcompiler can't do all three from one source ;-) hint...hint
Part of the reason that I have been asking if there was a version for the PC that I could look at, was to see if Ebookcompiler had the capability to handle a book like the Bible, as well as how the 'indexing' for quickly jumping to a specific book, chapter and verse are handled. Word searches should not be a problem, it is the ease in moving around and jumping from one location to another without having to use a branching architecture.
