Newbie question

 »What software do I need?

DougN I'm working on a how-to ebook about wood finishing. My question is what software do I need to keep up with my customer list when I start marketing? For example when I start selling several items I don't want to market the same item to someone who has already purchased.

I know about autoresponders and how they are used in marketing but do I need some type database program to sort and keep track of everthing?

EBookCompiler We just keep a record of what our customers have bought in a spreadsheet

As for marketing specific items to specific people, we don't particularly go for that.  For example, if you publish a newsletter or web site, your customers are better off choosing for themselves what interests them, rather than you choosing for them

...but you could, I suppose, set up an autoresponder for each particular variant of customer.

DougN Thanks for the suggestion about using a spreadsheet. That and autoresponders may be all I need to get started.

I had no idea autoresponders were so sophisticated...they pretty much do everything.
