The other day I had a lady contact me about one of the services I offer, seeking pricing information. I informed her how much her project would cost to develop and answered all her other questions in as timely a matter as I could. In the end she informed me that her and her husband were on an extremely tight budget so she would have to consider my services at another time. Instead of losing her as a possible customer for projects she may have needed done in the future I offered to do her project in exchange for editing some of my articles. She was surprised that I would agree to this but ecstatic at the same time. After further conversation with her she revealed to me that she is an employee of one of the largest insurance companies in the U.S. and that she had intended to mention my services to her superiors as possible use in marketing their different insurance products. She also told me I should think about branching into consulting for the indusrty I’m in. I never really thought of myself as a consultant until she brought the idea up. I mean I only answered about 10 questions for her. It’s amazing what happens when you give a lot in exchange for a little.
