After several years of providing services to the mail order/direct mail world, I've decided to try it in the Internet world.
This is my question.... Offline I've been very comfortable contacting someone I didn't know via mail about doing a JV. I've formed numerous relationships doing this and have a pile of affiliates for my efforts. I see in the online world that it's a bit different. Some of the statements I've read from the "gurus" say you shouldn't contact people you don't know. That anyone worth contacting is too busy to do or look at your JV offer. Well if that's the case how'd they become a guru? Self appointed? I wont even go on to that topic... Okay, so here's the big question....
What is the best way to contact someone you think you would like to do a JV with. I'm not talking about those template letters you can send people. I'm talking like you have a product, and you want to do a JV with a few people you know of online who don't know you but promote products similar to the product you have developed?
Sometimes it is okay to contact people you don't know, via email.
Sometimes it is not okay.
And it depends on why and how you are contacting them.
The issue is (1) the penalties for spamming (or even just being accused of spamming can be pretty severe), (2) whether your email is junked instead of read.
Don't harvest addresses from forums etc. Subscribe to their newsletters, visit their sites, and you can get a feel whether it is okay or isn't, write personally if you do write, and it's never okay to send mass/form email.
One other thing... I think you ought to be prepared to give a free copy of your product to anybody you do email. First, it avoids any impression that your JV offer is really a thinly veiled sales letter. Second, you're probably just wasting your and the recipient's time, unless you're prepared to let them look at your product before deciding whether to JV.
Join some forums related to your product topic, just *participate* for a while, take your time, but before you know it you'll probably have lots of new online friends, some of whom might be suitable JV partners.
One of the most popular ways to get email addresses is to give something away that appeals to a prospective JV, then email the link where they can download/view the material. That way you'll know that it is a valid email address.
Think of a web site as the ultimate sales letter that sells the sizzle and not the steak.
I've had great success with JV's by contacting people I don't know. The bottom line is, that as long as you have something to bring to the table to make some type of partnership worthwhile then your proposal will probably be considered. I receive countless emails in my inbox on a daily basis asking for a JV in some way, shape or form, but they are all writen using the same templated email. To me this shows this person doesn't really care too much about my product or service. In the past, I've researched possible partners and writen them personalized emails outlining why I think a partnership would be benificial. It's important to say things that let the webmaster know you actually took some time to look at their site/ product. Don't just say "I looked at your site, and it looks great". Tell them something so they know you actually spent some time on their site.
Use their name if you can find it, mention a product they have adveritised, read the "about us" page and regergitate some of that information in your email to them.
By spending some time on these emails you could find yourself with a few more JV's than you think.
Absolutely correct ebook architect - after all, the people you want as partners are successful (therefore busy), and so your offer has to stand out from the crowd.
A great jv campaign is one where you have a highly desireable offer to your market - and it usually needs to be more than just an extra 5% commmission.
Can you create some content for their website in return for links?
Can you create a 10 page special report that you can "brand" with your JV partner's affiliate link so they can give it away to their customers/subscribers and you get traffic to your site from anyone clicking through?
Can you offer to record an interview with your prospect (over the telephone) and give them a no-charge copy in return for some exposure to their customers?
Can you find a software tool that relates to their business that you can give them - either freeware, shareware or even have something developed on the cheap through elance, scriptlance or rentacoder.
The really great JV campaigns stand out - think of the different ways you can make your stand out.
