»How do you concvert PDF files into an Ebook?

jferguso My wife has created a cookbook that got formatted by a friend into PDF format.  She would like to make an Ebook out of it but I don't know how to do it since it is already in PDF form.  Any suggestions?

Storyman Which applications was used to create the cookbook: Word? inDesign? Notebook? ???

It would help tremendously if you still had the original files. Can you get a copy of them?

Alaska Right.  PDFs are another output format, intended for print media.

Your Activ ebook needs the text in Html files; this is easy enough to do;  just Google for 'free html editors' or something like that.  Add a 'compare' to see their ratings....  There are a lot of free tools out there.  Of course, if you have DreamWeaver, or some such, use it.

You should be able to import your source files, or cut and paste it in as needed.

Make sure you save your initial start page as index.htm.

jferguso My wife says the source file was in the InDesign fotrmat(I'm too much of a newbie to know what that format is) BUT we used a PDF to make changes to the pdf files such as remumbering 250+ pages and redoing the index. Whatr signifigance is there to saving the initial start page (the page behind the cover?) as an index.htm? Will a (free) html editor be able to conver the "polished" PDF files to something convertable into an EBook or am I stuck with redoing all the changes I have made to the PDF file in the InDesign files?
Thanks! Jim

Storyman You are probably in luck. Adobe's inDesign will export to HTML. At the very least the text could be copied and exported as well.

One advantage PDFs have is that they also work on MACs. The problem is that unless you have their server program you will be hard pressed to keep them secure. Even with password protection it won't prevent file and password sharing.

Storyman Hi Jferguso,

Just noticed that HPYrLock V3 now supports secure PDF files.  Looks like a good way to use PDFs with viral marketing.

jferguso Thanks!  I am checking it out now.  The universe of what is possible to do online keeps expanding and my time keeps shrinking!
