There's a lot to answer in your questions and to give you a realistic answer would take far more space than what is permitted here. I'd suggest you read through the various posting on this site that address your questions.
Clarence, The steps required are basically this: 1- You have to have some useful information to put in the eBook. Something that will explain your business or unique selling position. 2- Get your visitors to subscribe to a mailing list in order to get the book. Therefore, you have an opt-in mail list that you can e-mail later. 3- Your eBook sould include links back to your site; more detailed info; also to your order page assuming you have one. You may also want to include telephone and other contact info 4- Actually make the eBook once you have all the details.
Our eBooks are for a very narrow range of people, so we don't find that they get 'passed around' much, but they do get downloaded.
What's nice about eBooks is that you can guide your customer through your sales pitch, assuming that's what you want to do. If you provide general info, then tell people that YOUR SERVICE includes this, or something like that, it will entice people to click to your site.
However, please understand that there are a lot of other issues that have to be addressed first, before you get the eBook going. Of course, you need the content. Then, once you promote it on a web site, you need some way of tracking it. Like I said, you should have a subscription base to get the book. Use an autoresponder package to keep in touch and to broadcast to people. If you are in the phone business, I am thinking that it would appeal to a large number of people... so it shouldn't take long.
But then.. you also have to do search engine optimization so that people find your site. That can be an entirely different full time job.
There's lots to do... and I hope this has helped. If I can give you any other suggestions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Don't know if this is what you want or not, but if your ebook will mainly be to promote your web site, and it will stand up as an interesting product on it's own, why not sell it on eBay?
Even if you sell it for $1 / £1, at least that's another pair of eyes looking at your site.
If you want to go further, offer your ebook with resale rights, and let others sell it for you!
As I said, though, your ebook will need to stand up on its own as a product in its own right, or no-one will be interested.
