eBook Power Error Message

nickjames001 Hi Sunil, (and everyone else!)

I downloaded eBook Power today and have been playing around with it.

I have just been putting a couple of hyperlinks in the
index.html page to start playback of cd audio, and while most things seem to work ok, pause, resume, next previous etc etc, I keep getting an error message via an alert box each time I launch the ebook for the first time and use the hyper link

<A HREF="##AMM.CDTRACKMODE(1)##AMM.CDTRACK(1)##AMM.CDPLAY()">Click here to play track 1, and pause at the start of track 2</A>

The error message is "Track number out of range for this CD must be between 1 and 0"

If I click OK to the alert box, and press the link again, everything works fine??????

Any suggestions?

I have tried changing the CDTRACK to (1),(2),(3) and (4)
but always get the same response, I have also played around with using and not using CDTRACKMODE.

There are 4 audio tracks on the CD inthe drive.

EBookCompiler 1. Are you 100% sure you are using an audio CD - i.e. one that will play in a CD player (not a computer data CD with wavs or mp3s or something).

2. Did you make your own audio CD? What is your test CD?

I haven't done any testing yet, but I'm going to make a couple of suggestions to try first

1. Get a pop music CD with a whole bunch of tracks. Preferably one you bought at least a couple of years ago (some new CDs now aways have done wierd stuff like messing with contents and track record to make them either not play in the computer or hard to copy).  Does the code work with this CD?

If yes - it is probably something with this particular CD.  If you are burning your own audio CD, could it be that the CD contents data is missing (?).  I guess you'd need to investigate the CD creation software manual to see if you can find out reasons

3. Make up a test page sort of like

<A HREF="##AMM.CDGETSTATUS()##MESSAGEBOX('CD status is: {amm.cdstatus}')">Click here to get CD status</A>
<A HREF="##AMM.GETSTATUS()##MESSAGEBOX('Track count is: {amm.cdtrackcount}')">Click here to get CD track count</A>

By clicking around the various links, you should be able to investigate what is going.

By the way if the track count comes back as 0, I think this means the computer doesn't think it's an audio CD - i.e. it's a data CD.

nickjames001 Sunil,

I sent you a copy of the ebook I was having trouble with re the above by email, together with the source code it contains.

Did you experience the same problem?

I did as you suggested above, but still receive the same error messages.

Any more thoughts?

I can resend the same email to you if required.

EBookCompiler I sent you a reply a few hours ago

If you haven't already done so, can you send me the HTML of that page

I am doing testing when I switch over to the other PC.

EBookCompiler Results of initial (quick) test controlling Dean Martin The Best Of The Capitol Years CD

PC 1, Win98, IE5.5, Real Player Basic installed
- no problems whatsoever. I have not tried every command but all the ones I've tried work fine.

PC 2, Win98, IE5.5, RealOne Player installed
- sometimes getting similar problems to what you are getting.  Now a few interesting things on this PC
- if I click the link a couple of times (after closing RealOne), eventually it does work.
- RealOne seems to want to take over playing the CD and not let anything else have access. When I closed it, I seemed to get back control via the ebook

Previously we tested on a lot of PCs, including I'm sure the one which now has RealOne and seems to struggle

Right now my guess is that it is RealOne causing the problem.  Do you have it your PC? If yes, does closing it make any difference.

nickjames001 I had Real Player V 7 Installed on the machine.

Never use it, so I removed it completely and guess what?..... Everything works as it should do.

Must say I have never been happy with Real Player for various reasons, so I wont miss it, just wondering how many of my customers will have it installed on their machines?....

Oh well

Sunil Many thanks for your help on this

EBookCompiler If you are concerned about this I would put a warning in your documentation or ebook.  As you know if returns 0 tracks in this case, your ebook could even detect this situation and give a warning message to the user to close Real Player.

This whole situation kind of reminds me of the browser wars, when different browsers would try to set themselves as the default and lock the other out. I can not for the life of me understand why RealPlayer would want to lock out other CD audio applications, but as far as I can tell, something like this does seem to be happening.
