As you probably know in HTML/HTTP GET and POST in forms escape various characters using slashes, quotes etc. This is probably what's messing up the variable
Now when you use the variable in curly braces, it expands differently - as this probably makes it a syntax error in the script statement - or something like that - I'm guessing without knowing the value of the variable
